No. HHOS is primarily a homeless befriending and community organisation, not a shelter. We build relationships with people experiencing homelessness and help them navigate available community and social-service support.

Yes. You can refer a friend, family member, client or someone you have encountered who may be experiencing homelessness. Where possible, please involve the person concerned and respect their wishes and privacy. Use help.homeless.sg.

Start with the person, not the problem. If it is appropriate and safe, say hello and listen before assuming what the person needs. Avoid photographing or sharing identifiable information without consent. If the person would like assistance, you can make a referral through help.homeless.sg.

HHOS is an all-volunteer organisation and is not an emergency service. For an immediate medical emergency, call 995. For an immediate crime or safety emergency, call 999.

Start by completing our volunteer sign-up. Volunteering can include regular street outreach and befriending, recce missions, special outreach activities, case follow-ups, advocacy and communications, coordinating practical assistance and other community-building work.

Yes, subject to the capacity and needs of the relevant outreach team. Our street outreach is primarily about building relationships rather than simply distributing things. New volunteers may be briefed or trained before joining a team.

No. Many HHOS volunteers do not have a professional social-service background. Being willing to listen, learn, respect healthy boundaries and treat our homeless friends with dignity is more important for most general volunteering roles. Specialised roles may require relevant qualifications.

We regularly receive enquiries from students and youth groups. Suitable activities depend on factors such as age, the nature of the activity and whether you are participating independently or through an organised group. Please include your age and school or organisation when signing up.

Yes. Please tell us who your group is, approximate number and age of participants, preferred dates, what you hope participants will learn or contribute, and whether you are looking for outreach, a talk, a learning experience, a project or a longer-term partnership. Possibly. However, our homeless friends are people, not an activity or attraction. Our outreach teams exist first to build genuine relationships with them. We therefore consider visits according to what is appropriate for our homeless friends and outreach teams, rather than simply filling a particular date.

Possibly. Please include your school, university or institution; course or research programme; research question or topic; what you are requesting from HHOS; how the information will be used; whether the work will be publicly available; your deadline; and whether research ethics approval is required or has been obtained. Possibly, on a case-by-case basis. Researchers have accompanied HHOS teams before, but an outreach is not a tour. The privacy, dignity, safety and existing relationships of our homeless friends come first. Please explain clearly what you wish to observe, what information will be recorded and how it will be used.

Sometimes, but we cannot promise an interviewee. Our homeless and formerly homeless friends are people, not case studies. Any participation must be genuinely voluntary, and their privacy, consent and dignity come before the needs of a journalist, student, researcher or organisation.

Yes. HHOS gathers information through street outreach, referrals and our #CityOfRefuge help system. Public resources include our information about homelessness in Singapore, annual reports and audited financial statements, the #CityOfRefuge project and public statistics dashboard. For national-level research, you can also refer to studies and street counts published by the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

HHOS is a registered charity but is currently not an Institution of a Public Character (IPC). We therefore cannot currently issue tax-deductible donation receipts.

Possibly. Please check with us before organising a large collection or buying items specifically for HHOS. Needs change over time, and checking first helps ensure that what is collected is genuinely useful.

HHOS is a volunteer-led homeless befriending organisation. Our approach centres on advocating, befriending, collaborating and demonstrating relational community initiatives. Our mission is to help make Singapore a City of Refuge for the displaced and isolated.

We believe practical resources matter, but relationships matter too. A person experiencing homelessness may need accommodation, employment, healthcare or financial assistance, but they may also need friends and a community who will continue walking alongside them. That is why HHOS places befriending and relationships at the heart of our work.

HHOS is a secular organisation based on Christian values, reflecting the faith background of its founders. Our volunteering and support are open to people regardless of race, language or religion. You do not need to be Christian to volunteer with HHOS or receive support.
